MARATHOKEFALAS

Situated west of Chania is the ‘up and coming’ beach resort of Kolymbari. Travel East down the highway from Chania and in less than 30 minutes you will be at Kolymbari.

Kolymbari is a relatively quiet village sat on a glorious beach with wonderful sea views almost everywhere. At the moment ‘they’ are building a 5 Star Hotel and other accommodation about 100 metres from the sea front, so I imagine it will see a few more visitors than the select few who are currently aware of Kolymbari.

Kolymbari has all the amenities -supermarkets, tavernas, cafes, banks etc. - that are required for day to day living. There are more than 1000 permanent residents. In contrast to this – although only 3 minutes away -  high above Kolymbari sits the very peaceful and quiet village of Marathokefalas, with about 80 permanent residents and just one small kafenion.

Marathokefalas is an old traditional Cretan village that has retained its original character. It has (of course) a large church in the centre of the square at the centre of the village. You can find it by coming off at the Kolymbari ‘turn off’ and going south to Spilia for a few hundred metres and then turn right up the hill to Marathokefalas.

Because the village is at the top of this hill, the views are fantastic. The village and most of the properties have views to sea – over the valleys to the mountains and more. It’s like being in a helicopter – the definition of panoramic.

There are a couple of other churches in the village and it is also worth visiting the ancient cave of Aghios Ioannis Erimitis (St. John the Hermit) which is about 100 metres from the edge of the village. This place and the area all around the village is still very natural and picturesque, great for walking or just a stroll in the evening.

This is a great and quiet village in which to live, whilst being only 3 minutes from the beach and lots of good tavernas. A couple of the photos below have been uploaded from Panoramio.
